No-sew loaf cat vs sewing loaf cat patterns…

To sew or not to sew, that is the question!! Basically it is simple – if you are a beginner than generally speaking the sew loaf cat crochet patterns will be “better” or easier for you. As the ones you have to sew, tend to use the simplest stitches (ie mostly just the single crochet stitch). However, if you are more experience and are happy to give the bobble stitch (popular for creating paws attached to your crochet with no-sew) a go, as well as are comfortable with crocheting back loop only (BLO) or front loop only (FLO) then a no-sew loaf crochet pattern is for you!

This tutorial is the SEWING loaf cat crochet pattern, which is perfect for beginners!

Can you customise this Loaf Cat Crochet Pattern?

Are you making this cat plush toy for a cat loving friend? Yes? Then why not customise the colours a little to reflect the colouring and markings of your friends cat?! Does the cat have stripes? Yes.. which colours? Does it have a whote paw maybe? Adapt the colours as you go to suit your cat! Wouldn’t that be cute?

This pattern would be lovely as a whole set of different crochet cats for sure! Just adapt yarn colours to suit your kitty! You could also adapt this lovely little cat crochet for different seasons – e.g. make an orange or black cat for Halloween or add a cute accessories to your cat like a crochet Santa Hat for Christmas?! A great way to improve your crochet skills all year round! The kids will love this crochet toy! Just so much cuteness and a perfect gift for any cat person!

How to crochet a cat loaf? How do you crochet an amigurmi cat? How do you crochet a fat cat?

Let’s begin by saying – there are of course LOTS of wonderful free cat crochet patterns out there! Some of these cat crochet patterns will be more “doll like” (e.g. with long arms and legs – e.g. Kristi Tullus has a pattern) and others, like ours, are based on basic shapes. In this case, the cat crochet pattern is based on a “Ball”. Crochet Balls are super easy to make and great for beginners, which is why we like this free crochet pattern so much.

As to amigurumi cat crochet patterns? Amigurumi patterns generally are simply “small” crochet patterns… made a tiny or cute as you can. You could try using today’s pattern, but with thinner yarn and a smaller hook… and your cat plush toy will certainly end up smaller and there for more amigurumi cat like! Having said that we are a great fan of the dumpling kittens crochet pattern on Ravelry. My daughter has made one and adores it!

Finally, to the frequently asked “fat cat” question.. I think a ball shaped cat, is perfect for you fat cat lovers! (Though Bernat here is funny!). So you see, there really are a lot of crochet cat patterns out there.. but I do thing that this particular amigurumi cat pattern shared here today, is one of the best patterns for beginners!

Note: this is a medium sized cat loaf crochet pattern. If you are looking for a small cat crochet pattern, try these super cute mini loaf cats or these dumpling cats that I have shared via this collection of free crochet patterns! Or try this one, which is similar to the dumpling kittens! Looking for a more “doll like cat”? You make like this one.

Yarn used to make this fat cat crochet pattern

Yarn

To make this lovely cat crochet pattern you will need some of our fine fibre lambs wool.  We make three different weights of our yarn,

  • a 2 ply called Rare,
  • a 4 ply called Halo and
  • an Aran weight called Bold.

You can pick any weight you want to make this cat, the instructions remain the same.  Make sure you select the correct crochet hook size for the weight of yarn you are using.

Hooks

  • Use a 2mm hook with Rare
  • a 3mm hook with Halo and
  • a 5mm hook with Bold.

You will also require a different amount of yarn depending on which yarn you are using.  The finer yarn and small hook make a smaller cat and the heavier weight yarn and bigger hook make a bigger cat.  You will need one 50g skein to make the cat in our Rare or Halo weight yarn and will need 2 50g skeins to make the cat in Aran weight yarn.   You will also need a small amount of yarn in the contrast stripe colour.

You will also need

  • 2 safety eyes,
  • a safety nose,
  • some nylon for the whiskers,
  • a darning needle,
  • stitch marker and
  • stuffing.

The kit comes complete with all of these parts.

Terminology used in this craft tutorial:

  • Ch – chain (note: NO magic circle – again, great for beginner crafters)
  • SC – single crochet
  • sc2tog – decrease
  • 2 sc into next – increase
  • slip stitch

Begin this Cat Pattern with the Body & Head – one part – making a loaf cat!

NOTE: You will be making the cat in rounds, do not join rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

Using your main colour yarn create a slip knot to begin.

Create a slip stitch to begin.

Chain 2, 6 sc into first st

Rnd 1:  2 sc into each st (12)

Rnds 2 – 4:  sc into ea st.  Fasten off.

Stuff the legs with a small amount of stuffing and sew the legs onto the cat.

Your crochet cat will need TWO crochet ears:

Chain 18 and join together with a slip stitch.

Rnds 1 – 2:  sc into ea (18)

Rnd 3:  *sc into one st, sc2tog, repeat from * to end of rnd (12)

Flatten the ear to create a triangle shape and sew onto the cat.

And finally, make your cat crochet a tail

Chain 2, 6 sc into first st (6)

Sc into ea st, continue going round and round in this manner until you have completed approximately 4 rounds, then change to your contrast colour and make one round, then change back to your main colour, keep repeating this process until the tail measures approximately 6cm long (measurement applies to 4ply Halo, you will need to make the tail approx 2cm longer for a cat in aran weight and approx 1 – 2cm shorter for Rare weight yarn.  Fasten off.  Sew the tail onto your cat.

Finishing off your toy cat loaf – adding whiskers

To make the whiskers take some nylon thread and a darning needle and sew the whiskers on individually either side of the nose.
