Toilet Roll Owl Gift Box

Making these owl gift boxes is super fun and easy and can be made with kids of all ages. We had a go at yarn wrapping again – as it is such a fun technique for toddlers and preschoolers and great for those fine motor skills. But it also looks lovely and older kids will enjoy making them too.

As we love to be “practical”, these little yarn wrapped owls, are not only cute decorations, but make a great gift box too!

We made ours as a set of Toilet Paper Roll Valentine’s Owls… but of course you can make these cute owls all year round!

How to make a toilet paper tube gift box step instructions

Making these gift boxes really is super easy and the supplies needed are most basic! We chose to paint our toilet paper tubes, but you can also wrap them in paper and decorate with paper – whatever you find easiest! You can even leave them in the original cardboard tube colour – as the yarn wrapping, paper wings, googly eyes and beaks will add lots of colour to your craft too.

Paint your paper tubes

Paint your toilet rolls
Paint lots of Toilet Paper Rolls or Cardboard Tubes in one go, ready for owl decorating and yarn wrapping.

Choose what colours you would like to make your gift boxes. We went for red, orange, purple and blues. As mentioned you CAN leave your cardboard tubes PLAIN…. but we did choose to paint ours for that extra POP.

paint the cardboard tube

Paint your toilet paper tubes.

As mentioned you can wrap them in coloured paper instead if you wish! But we find paint more resourceful and cost effective.

Let dry fully.

paint in lots of colours

Shape your cardboard tubes into a gift box tutorial

Shape the toilet roll
Shape the top end of your cardboard tube. Then repeat for the other side.

This is the “clever” bit. You need to shape the top and bottom of your cardboard tube to allow it close.

Take your toilet paper tube. With your thumb, gently press the centre of the top rim, so it makes a curve.

Repeat on the reverse side.

You should now have a closed end.

Now take the other end of the roll and repeat.

You now have a basic gift box that you can decorate however you wish!

Add the owl’s features

cut your owl eyes and owl beak + wings

Now you owl will need some

  • eyes,
  • a beak,
  • some owl wings/ owl feathers and
  • some owl feet!

You can make these with any materials you have to hand e.g.

  • Construction paper/ bits of scrap paper
  • Craft feathers
  • Felt
  • Fabric scraps
  • buttons/ googly eyes

In short – time to raid your craft box and see what you have to hand already. Avoid making unnecessary purchases, but use up what you have or recycle some old clothes into fabrics and spare buttons!

Yarn wrap the toilet roll

tie the yarn for wrapping to your toilet paper owl

Tie on the yarn for your child – the small hands of preschoolers will find this difficult, so best to do it for them. Big kids can do this themselves and help their younger siblings.

Then wrap. Personally, we like to leave the top third of the toilet roll “free” for the owl’s big eyes and the owl’s beak. But as with all these crafts, it really is a question of personal preference and what the child wants to do.

You don’t need to wrap a lot of yarn for these to look effective. So if your yarn supplies are low, simply use less! Or if making these in the classroom and trying to economise, only a little yarn is necessary to be effective. Especially if you did choose to paint the cardboard tube first!

Adding the owl featurs to your toilet paper roll owl

Prepare all your features – and glue them into place with either normal craft glue for the classroom or a hot glue gun if crafting at home. Eyes go at the top of the roll. Then the beak. Then glue the wings to the side of the owl – I also tucked them under the yarn at the top, but this isn’t strictly speaking necessary!

Isn’t this the perfect craft for Valentine’s Day? Or make a set of Mom on Mother’s day!

These little yarn wrapped owls are great for preschoolers and developing fine motor skills.. as you can help with cutting out the features and the kiddos can focus on painting, wrapping yarn and sticking the features in place. Great to get little hands involved and practicing those fine motor skills.

I hope you enjoyed this easy tutorial and our adorable toilet paper roll owl craft and that you give it a go one day! As mentioned they, make great little Mother’s Day Gift Boxes or birthday gift boxes too. Any owl-lover will adore receiving this!
