How to make potato print frog cards!

Potato Print Frog Cards

These potato print frog cards are not only fun for exploring print making.. but they make cute keepsakes too, as they combine both potato prints and finger print making. So these is a super cute little finger print frog art project too!

As you can see from my “lead image” – you can of course simply make a fun potato print frog card.. and leave it at that.. but there are SOOOOO many ways you can take this basic frog card DIY and customise it for all occasions and seasons. I did a handful with JUST paper additions – but to demonstrate other opportunities, I cheekily edited some electronically for you as inspiration as well!

Obviously hand written text will look different – but I think just as nice! I you aren’t confident in writing “nicely”, you can do it on paper first and cut it out, before sticking it on your card. That will still look great and not “spoil” your card.

Alternatively. Write it carefully in pencil first, then go over in pen. Let it dry FULLY before rubbing out any pencil marks!

Supplies neede to make diy Printed Frog Cards:

  • A potato (you may want a small potato if your kids finger’s are smaller etc)
  • Green paint for the frog
  • Cardstock in desired colors
  • Paper scraps to make your frog cards seasonal or suit any occasions
  • Black pen/ googly eyes etc for frog face features
  • Scissors and glue stick for embellishments (optional)

How to make a potato print frog card for all occasions (including Valentine’s Day!)

First.. let’s focus on making our basic DIY Frog Card using the potato print and finger print technique.

dried the potato for printing

Cut your potato in half. Make the cut as straight as possible as this will make more of an even print! You can cut across your potato for a smaller, fatter potato print frog or lengthwise for a longer thinner frog print!

I like to dry my potato first, I feel it holds the paint better!

load the potato with green paint

Load your potato with paint. I actually prefer to do this with the paint brush!

Carefully press down the potato and lift off.

I do sometimes add a bit of paint to any gaps. But this is a personal preference.

Now it is time for some finger printing fun!

I used my index finger for the frog’s legs and eyes.

For the frogs legs – make one perpendicular print and then a horizontal print. See photos!

Repeate for the other frog leg!

Then make two green blobs for the frog’s eyes.

Later, when I experimented with the googly eyes, I liked the larger eyes better.. so do make a big print – rub the finger around a little if you need to!

Now let your potato print and finger print frog dry fully!

frog eyes

Now have a play with you googly eyes. As mentioned, I decided the bigger ones where more fun.. so I did add a little more green to one of the frogs and let it dry.

Then simply add a big happy frog mouth and some rosy cheeks! Isn’t this your sweetest frog friend? So cute!

Now you have your basic frog card finished!
